RESEARCH CAPABILITY

Over 45 years of development, the Institute for Veterinary Research and Development of Central Vietnam (IVRD) has got many achievements in research, training and production resulting in multiple qualified products which are highly recommended by a number of scientists and farmers nationwide. IVRD has continuously invested in human resources, research and production facilities to match demand of livestock and veterinary industries. Strategic plan of IVRD is described below.

STRATEGIC PLAN

  • Focus on applied research to match practical needs and develop new vaccines for effective disease prevention.
  • Improve technological processes in the production of vaccines and veterinary biological products, in order to improve product quality.
  • Research that server society, solve practical problems of livestock industries, prevent of infectious diseases in cattle and poultry; and improved public health are of interest.

TRAINING

We continuously invest in human resources for a long term development of IVRD. A number IVRD staffs have been training in countries with strengths in vaccine development and production such as Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Australia, USA and Italy. The current research team of IVRD includes 14 Doctor, 23 Master and 3 Bachelor. Short-term training to improve expertise and foreign languages are often provided for staffs to match the IVRD requirement for development. IVRD also collaborate with Thai Nguyen University and Tay Nguyen University to train students at Diploma and Graduate levels. The IVRD research staffs at IVRD often supervised 2-3 PhD students, 5-6 master students; 15-20 graduate students annually.

RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER IN THE LAST 10 YEARS

Before 2007, IVRD carried out 1-2 institutional projects or branched out project with a budget of 20-40 million VND per project. From 2007 up to now, IVRD runs 3-4 national or misnisterial projects, 4-5 institutional projects in Veterinary Medicine and Fisheries with a budget of 2.5-10.1 billion VND per project. Publications of IVRD in national and international journals are increasing in quality and quantity. On average, IVRD publishs 9-10 domestic papers and 3-4 internation paper annually. Research outcomes has been transferred to:

  1. IVRD production plan

New technologies and procedures in production of vaccines and veterinary biological products are transfferered directly to IVRD production plan for development of new products. Up to now, IVRD is producing 23 vaccines and veterinary biological products such as: Trivalent vaccine against Pasteurrellosis, Salmonellosis and Cholera in swine (TRI I.VAC), Toxoid vaccine for necrotizing enterocolitis in goats, sheep and cows; Gumboro vaccine; Goat and sheep Pasteurrellosis vaccine; Bivalent vaccine against pasteurellosis and erysipelas in swine; E.coli vaccine against edema diseases in swine; Emulsified bovine pasteurellosis vaccine; Colisal vaccines, or probiotics for cattle, poultry and aquatic products, etc.

Research on technological processes, in order to improve the effectiveness and quality of vaccines: bivalen vaccines against Pasteurrellosis and Salmonellosis in swine; Swine cholera vaccine; Newcastle vaccine; Poultry pasteurrellosis, Salmonellosis vaccine; Duck cholera vaccine; Swine Pasteurrellosis vaccine, Chickenpox vaccine; Swine Salmonellosis vaccine…

  1. Diagnostic department

Diagnostic processes which are original from research outcomes or collaborations have been quickly applying to diagnosis of diseases caused in cattle, poultry and aquatic animals. . Highlighted procedures are: Leptospira Diagnostic Procedure (Cooperation with Italy); Diagnostic procedure for Salmonella disease (World Health Organization); Diagnostic procedure for E.coli disease (in cooperation with Belgium); Diagnostic procedures for aquatic animal diseases (Cooperation with Australia); Diagnostic procedure for white spot disease of yellowfin pompano; Diagnostic procedure for fascioliasis; Diagnostic procedure for tapeworm disease in ruminants; Gnathosthoma diagnosis process; Diagnostic procedure for reproductive fluke disease in ducks….

  1. Local government

A number of procedures for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases have been transferred to local governments, contributing to reduction of outbreak in infectious diseases in livestock industries. Highlighted procedures are: Process of prevention and treatment of reproductive fluke disease in ducks; Process of prevention and treatment of blue ear disease in pigs; Process of prevention and treatment of lungworm disease in pigs; Process of prevention and treatment of blood parasites in cattle; Procedures for prevention and treatment of diarrhea in calves; Procedures for prevention and treatment of respiratory and digestive diseases in goats and sheep; Procedures for prevention and treatment of pneumonia in calves; Procedures for prevention and treatment of Leptospira disease in pigs; The process of prevention and treatment of white spot disease in pompano; Procedures for the prevention and treatment of parasitic diseases on animals; Procedures for the prevention and treatment of parasitic diseases transmitted from animals to humans (Hepatic fluke disease, Neospora disease, Gnathostoma disease, …)
